Trieste: what to see in one day
Vienna by the sea: coffee, a castle above the water and private tours with a licensed guide
Trieste is a city pretending to be Vienna by the sea: imperial boulevards, historic coffee houses and the white Miramare Castle above the water. The Slovenian border is twenty minutes away, so it fits easily into any holiday on the coast. To really understand the city, join a tour with a licensed guide — in English or Russian, just for your group.

When to come and what each season offers
Coffee on the terraces, Miramare in bloom, no crowds.
Hot; the city swims at Barcola, evenings on Piazza Unità are the best.
The Barcolana regatta in October — thousands of sails in the bay. The first bora.
Gale-force bora, a Christmas market on the square, full coffee houses.
All year: Trieste is a city, not a resort. In winter the bora blows — a gale-force wind, ropes are strung along the seafront. Summers are hot, but the evenings on the square are the best.

Practical tips
- Order coffee the local way: “nero” is an espresso, “capo” a small cappuccino.
- Leave the car by the station or the sea: the centre is a camera-controlled ZTL zone.
- Miramare park is free; the castle is best in the evening when the park empties.
