Where to eat in Trieste

Trieste blends Slovenian, Italian and Adriatic cuisine, with plenty of spots overlooking the sea. Check menus and average prices before you visit.

Must-try dishes

Kremšnita — a layered cream dessert, the signature treat of Bled. Pasta with truffles — an Istrian classic. Local wine — Refošk and Malvasia, often from the nearby Vipava Valley vineyards. Perfect with — prosciutto and olive oil with bread.

Average bill

Lunch at a café — from €15 to €20 per person. Dinner at a restaurant with a sea view — 25–35 €. A bottle of local wine from €12. Tips are optional, usually 10%.

Should you book a table

In high season (July–August) popular seaside spots fill up by evening — booking ahead is a good idea, especially for groups of more than 4.

Where to eat on the Slovenian coast and in Istria

The cooking here sits on a border, and it shows. On the coast it is Venetian — seafood, risotto, polenta, olive oil. Twenty minutes inland it turns Central European: cured meats, soups, dumplings, heavier and cheaper. Two very different lunches within half an hour of each other.

The word to know is konoba: a family tavern, usually with no printed menu in three languages and no photographs of the dishes. That is a good sign, not a bad one. Ask what came in that morning.

Practical notes. Lunch is served roughly from noon to three, dinner from seven; between those hours many kitchens simply close. In August a table by the water in Piran needs booking a day ahead. Cards are taken almost everywhere, but small konobas in the hills sometimes still prefer cash.

Restaurants near a particular town are listed under destinations, and several of our day trips include a stop for lunch at a place we have eaten at ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book a table?

In July and August — yes, especially for dinner by the sea in Piran and Portorož. Outside the season you can usually walk in, apart from Friday and Saturday evenings.

How much does a meal cost?

Lunch in a konoba is around 15–20 € per person, dinner with wine in a coastal restaurant 30–45 €. Fish is normally priced by weight, so ask before it goes on the grill.

Is there anything for vegetarians?

Yes, though the choice is narrower than in a big city. Inland places do well with vegetables, cheese and truffles; on the coast the vegetarian side of the menu is usually shorter.
