Free stop 1: Trubarjeva Street
You are on Trubarjeva Street. Just a few steps from postcard-perfect Prešeren Square — and already a completely different city.
Look around: painted shutters, stickers and graffiti on the walls, cafés with food from all over the world — falafel, ramen, Balkan burek. Vintage shops, tiny bars full of students.
Now, why the name? Primož Trubar was a sixteenth-century Protestant preacher. He wrote the first books in the Slovene language: a primer and a catechism. For his views he had to flee to Germany, and the books were printed there. His primer opens with words to his countrymen: “Dear Slovenes.” Without Trubar there might be no Slovene literary language.
So this street’s rebellious spirit is inherited. A man who dared to go against everyone gave his name to the freest street in the centre.
