Bled is Slovenia’s most famous postcard: an emerald lake, an island with a white church and a castle on a cliff. All the highlights fit easily into one day, and you don’t need a tour guide.

Morning: around the lake and cream cake

Start on the lakeside promenade near the centre. This is where you try kremšnita, the Bled cream cake with vanilla custard, made to the same recipe since 1953. Then walk along the shore to the pier at Mlino: wooden pletna boats leave from here — motorboats can’t take you to the island.

The island: 99 steps and the wishing bell

On the island climb the 99 steps to the church — by tradition the groom carries the bride up them. Inside is the wishing bell: ring it three times and make a wish. The boat waits about half an hour; check times and price with the oarsman.

Afternoon: Bled Castle

The castle on the cliff was first mentioned in 1004. Inside are a printing workshop where you can print a sheet on an old press, a wine cellar and a terrace with views of the lake and the Alps. The forest path up takes about 15 minutes.

How to do the route without a guide

The easiest way is an audio guide on your phone: “Bled: the lake and the island” leads from the promenade to the wishing bell, and “Bled Castle and its legends” from St Martin’s Church up to the castle terrace. A story at every stop, and the first stop is free. All routes are in the Bled audio guides section.
