Trieste is called Italy’s coffee capital: coffee for the whole empire passed through its port, and its historic coffee houses have been open for over a century. Be ready — coffee here has its own language.

How to order

Nero is an espresso. Capo is an espresso with a little milk, the local small cappuccino. Capo in b is the same in a glass. Ask for a “cappuccino” and you get the usual large one.

Historic coffee houses

Caffè San Marco has been open since 1914, Caffè Tommaseo since 1830. They are not tourist sets but places where people still read the papers and argue about politics.

Food next to the coffee

After coffee, a traditional buffet with hot snacks. Trieste’s cuisine mixes Viennese, Balkan and Italian. Try it all on our Trieste food tour with a guide.
