Venice in one day: travel guide
Venice without crowds or wasted money — if you know when and where to go
It is about 180 kilometres from Koper to Venice, roughly two hours by car, and the border between Slovenia and Italy has no checks — so Venice is an ordinary day trip from the coast. The golden rule: arrive early. Between eight and ten in the morning the city is yours; after eleven the main flow begins.

Warm, crowds still bearable. Easter and May holidays are the exception.
Heat, crowds, canal smells. Only early in the morning.
September is ideal; acqua alta starts in November — walkways go up on the square.
Fog and emptiness — the real Venice. Carnival in February fills the city.
Quietest early in the morning and after six in the evening; by season, November, January and February outside Carnival. On certain peak days the city charges day visitors an access fee — check the dates before you go.

Where do you leave the car?
At Piazzale Roma or on Tronchetto island — beyond that there are no cars. Parking is paid.
Is a gondola worth it?
The price is per boat, not per person: good value for six, expensive for two. The alternative is the vaporetto.
How long is the drive from Koper?
About two hours; longer on Friday evenings and in high season.
