Miramare is a white castle on a rock right above the sea, seven kilometres from central Trieste. It was built for Archduke Maximilian, who left from here as Emperor of Mexico. The story ended in tragedy for him and his wife Charlotte — which is why it is called the most beautiful and saddest castle on the Adriatic.

What to see

The park, with views over the whole gulf, is free. The castle keeps its period interiors — entry needs a ticket. The best photos are from the seafront below the rock and the upper park.

Getting there

The nearest bus stop is “Grignano”, a few minutes’ walk from the park entrance. Parking near Grignano is limited — in summer, come in the morning.
