Trieste grew as a free port that drew merchants from all over Europe. The Jewish community helped make it rich and open, and its traces are still visible in the centre.

What to see

The Synagogue of Trieste is one of the largest in Europe. The Carlo and Vera Wagner Jewish Community Museum tells the community’s story. Via delle Beccherie and nearby streets keep the memory of the former ghetto.

Visiting

The synagogue and museum keep their own hours and are closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays — check dates in advance. Shoulders should be covered.

With a guide

We run a Jewish Trieste tour (3 hours) and a storytelling walk through the Jewish cemetery — private for up to 10, in English or Russian.
