Lake Bled is Slovenia’s most famous sight: an island with a church in the middle of the water, a castle on a sheer rock and the Julian Alps on the horizon. It is about two hours from the coast and forty minutes from Ljubljana — easy in a day, better with two.

When to come and what each season offers
Snow on the peaks, green in the valley, few people. The pletna boats run.
Swimming and the full programme: Vintgar, Bohinj and Vršič are open. Busy.
Golden slopes and clear air — the best photos of the year.
Fog over the lake, almost empty. Castle and path open, Vršič closed.
May, June and September: stable weather and fewer people. In summer the lake warms up for swimming. In winter Bled is often in fog and almost empty — a different, quiet mood; the castle and the lakeside path stay open.

How do you get to the island?
Only across the water: by pletna, by rowing boat or, in summer, swimming.
Is one day enough?
Yes: the island, the castle and a walk by the lake. Save Vintgar and Bohinj for a second day.
Can you swim?
Yes, the water gets pleasant in summer; there are swimming areas below the castle and on the west shore.
