Trieste is Italy’s most “Viennese” city: imperial boulevards, historic coffee houses and the sea right by the main square. The Slovenian border is twenty minutes from the centre, so the city is easy to see in a day.
A one-day route
Start at Piazza Unità d’Italia, Europe’s largest square open to the sea. Next door, Molo Audace shows the whole city front. Then the Grand Canal and Borgo Teresiano, the Serbian Church of St Spyridon, the Roman theatre and the climb to San Giusto cathedral. In the afternoon, head to Miramare Castle, seven kilometres from the centre — best at sunset.
Coffee, Trieste style
Coffee has its own language here: an espresso is a “nero”, a small cappuccino a “capo”. Caffè San Marco has been open since 1914.
Better with a guide
